About the author:
Elizabeth Melton Parsons is a freelance writer of both fiction and nonfiction for newspapers and magazines, reviewer, and award winning poet. An English major she was born in the state of Michigan and grew up dividing her time between Michigan and South Florida. As a child she loved the Everglades in South Florida and still misses the ocean. Having lived in so many interesting places and getting to know such a diverse range of people while growing up sparked her imagination and gave her an endless supply of characters to draw from.
Elizabeth was born the 5th child of six, with four brothers and one sister. Her parents were hardworking farmers who instilled in her a love of the rural life and faith in God. Elizabeth always loved books, learning to read before starting school. After reading poems by Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe at the age of 12, she began to write her own poetry and short stories. She did her writing at night, shoving the hand written copies into a box under her bed. With the support and encouragement of her real life hero, her husband Garland, she began writing full time and gained success as both a freelancer and poet. Her poetry is featured in school syllabuses and published in textbooks.
Elizabeth loves writing romantic tales interwoven with intrigue, mystery, suspense, and the paranormal. Participating in various writing groups and workshops has helped to define her realistic and unique style that has come to be known and loved both nationally and internationally. Her newest releases are the best selling romance titled BLACK ROCK: A TIME FOR LOVE and the non-fiction LIZZIE AND THE BOY'S CLUB. When not writing, reviewing or indulging her other passions of painting and gardening, she loves hiking the hills around her hometown with her family and their boxer, Charlie. Shorter Version:
A professional writer and poet, Elizabeth has written for both newspapers and magazines. Today she prefers writing romance novels in several sub genres. Her love of books began as a child when she’d curl up in the barn loft on rainy days to read Edgar Allen Poe or Nancy Drew Mysteries. That love has only grown stronger over the years. She enjoys writing and reading sizzling romance enhanced with the elements of mystery, suspense, and the paranormal. Elizabeth resides in the Midwest with her husband, sons, and a silly if somewhat dangerous boxer named Charlie. Questions and Answers
Tell us about your newest book:
BLACK ROCK: A TIME FOR LOVE is the first in a planned time travel series. The setting begins on a ranch in Texas in the late 1800's and then goes forward to modern times. There's plenty of sizzling romance between Roxanne and Collin as well as suspense as they travel through time to escape the clutches of a killer. It was released in digital format on January 25, 2008 and will be in print July 25, 2008. I also have a new book for children or for those adults like myself who are still young at heart, LIZZIE AND THE BOY'S CLUB. My true life adventures of living in the Everglades of South Florida and the trouble I got into when trying to join an all boy's club. You can read excerpts from Lizzie and my other books at http://egparsons.com
What was the inspiration for your suspense novel, "Captive Fear"?
I've always wanted to write suspense novels with a touch of romance and I finally had the time. The characters rambling around inside my head are always my biggest inspiration, but CAPTIVE FEAR is very loosely based on personal experience.
What are you working on now?
I have several new books in progress. I'm currently in the submission stage for SHADOW OF RACHEL, a paranormal romance set after the Civil War. NIGHT TERROR is suspense and I hope to have it finished and polished for submission by early next year.
How long have you been writing?
I began writing poems and short stories when I was twelve and have been writing off and on ever since. My writing was put on hold for a while and it's wonderful to again be writing full time.
Why do you write?
To me, writing is like breathing. It's something I need to do. My mind is so full of stories, and characters wanting their stories told, I have to put them on paper. Even at those times when I wasn't writing full time, I'd scribble poetry or scenes and settings on scraps of paper.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Emily Dickinson, Dean Koontz, Edgar Allen Poe, Amanda Quick, Charlotte Bronte, Lavyrle Spencer, Elizabeth Lowell and many more. I'm an avid reader and I love finding wonderful new authors to add to my favorites. I've recently added M. Jean Pike, Karen Rose, Lindsey Sands and Debbie Stevens to my list of favorites.
Who would your books appeal to?
Because I write in different genres, my readers are both male and female and come from many walks of life. In regards to Captive Fear, anyone who enjoys suspense written in a realistic and graphic style would enjoy it. I've had letters from romance readers saying they loved the book even though they weren't suspense fans.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
I never stop studying and learning to improve my craft. That's the biggest thing, to continue to learn and grow. Also, submit, submit, submit, no matter how many rejections you receive. Never give up your dream and try to take something from the rejection to improve your writing. That's one reason I loath form rejection letters. They tell you absolutely nothing to help you improve.
